Sub: Examination of medical fitness of candidates who have undergone LASIK Surgery for various posts—reg.

Ref: Board’s office letter no. 2011/H/5/7(VR) dated 11.11.2013.

The matter of medical fitness of candidates who underwent LASIK Surgery was deliberated by the Hon‘ble Supreme Court of India in Case No. 28003-28004-2017. As per judgment of Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in Civil Appeal No(s). 1270-1271/2022, dated 10.05.2022 and with the approval of the Competent Authority in the Ministry of Railways the following will be the determinants for medical fitness of Candidates who have undergone LASIK Surgery:-

CandidatesWho have undergone LASIK Surgery A1 (AYE ONE)A2 (AYE TWO) & A3 (AYE THREE) “UNFIT”
B1 (BEE ONE) & B2 (BEE TWO) “FIT”

Subject to the following criteria being met:

1. No complications related to LASIK Surgery following LASIK Surgery are observed in the Candidate.

2. LASIK Surgery should be at least of one year duration and the same should be substantiated with a Medical Candidates Certificate issued by the specialist of the Institution where Who have surgery was performed undergone

3. “Residual Corneal Thickness” post LASIK Surgery should LASIK Surgery not be less than 425 microns on Pachymetry.

4. The visual acuity as per Para 512(1) (A) of IRMM, Vol.I, Third Edition 2000,

5. Fundus should be normal.

6. No evidence of progressive Eye disease.

C1 (CEY ONE) & C2 (CEY TWO) “FIT”

Further, it is signified that these instructions shall be applicable for all future recruitment/medical examination of Candidates from the date of issuance of the letter.

Advance Correction Slip to Para 512 of IRMM, 2000

Correction Slip to Para 512(9) of IRMM, 2000 relating to Radial Keratotomy and LASIK Surgery:-

Para 512(9) may now be read as under:-

A. All surgeries (Except LASIK) performed to correct refractive error:-

I. Candidates—Unfit in categories A and B.
II. Employees—Unfit in categories A and B.

Note:-

  • Mandatory declaration from candidate about such surgeries.
  • In addition to the declaration, the examining medical officer will use all the equipment at his/her disposal and take opinion of specialist, wherever available, to come to a reasonable conclusion about the declaration being true or otherwise.

B. Where LASIK Surgeries has been performed to correct refractive error:-

In cases of Candidates who have undergone LASIK Surgery for correction of refractive error, the following shall apply:-
