UPSC Civil Services Examination Pattern
The civil services preliminary examination consisted of two papers of 200 marks each. The paper consisted of objective-type multiple-choice questions, which were to be completed in two hours each i.e. Paper I: General Studies, Paper II: General Aptitude. Negative marking is applicable in the exam.
The final merits for qualifying the candidates for the civil services (mains) written examination will be drawn by using the aggregate marks obtained in Paper-I out of 200 marks and marks obtained in Paper-II out of 200 marks minus the maximum marks allocated to the questions on English language comprehension skills (i.e. those questions in Paper-II for which Hindi translation has not been given).

UPSC Civil Services Examination is conducted every year to select candidates for the Top Entry Level Posts in Central Government and State Government Service such as IAS – Indian Administrative Service, IPS – Indian Police Service, IFS – Indian Foreign Service etc. The Posts of other Group I Service / Class I Service in Central Government Departments such as Indian Postal Service, Indian Trade Service, Indian customs and central excise Service, Indian Revenue Service are also filled up only based on UPSC Civil Services Examination.
