JEE MAIN 2018 : Eligibility Criteria / Eligibility  for  Admission  to  NITs,  IIITs  and  CFTIs  participating  through  SEAT ALLOCATION BOARD

JEE (Joint Entrance Exam) is a common entrance exam conducted at all India level to facilitate students for getting admissions into different engineering colleges in India. JEE ranks among the toughest exams in the world and every year over 1.5 million students appear for this exam.

Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) is conducted in two phases. Many students appear for this test every year to get admissions into NITs, IITs, IIITs and other government funded technical institutes. The courses offered by these institutes are B.Tech/B.E, B.Arch, Integrated MSc’s, etc.

Before you plan to take the assessment, you must fulfill the JEE Mains eligibility criteria 2018 that includes Age Criteria, Attempts allowed, Minimum marks required for IIT JEE Mains, Subjects pursued in the Qualifying Examination, Year of passing the Qualifying Examination and more.

JEE Mains Eligibility Criteria:

A. Age Criteria:

a. All candidates (General and OBC) born on or after October 1st, 1993 are eligible to apply for JEE Mains 2018.

b. For SC, ST and PwD candidates, the age limit has been relaxed and should have born on or after October 1st, 1988 for being eligible.

B. Registration using Aadhaar Card:

a. A new criteria has been introduced by the CBSE from JEE Mains 2017, whereby the applicant must have a valid registered Aadhaar Card number for being eligible for JEE Mains.

C. Attempts allowed:

a. An aspirant can avail a maximum of 3 attempts in a JEE Mains exam and for applying in JEE Advanced exam, a student can appear only 2 consecutive times.

D. Minimum marks required for IIT JEE Mains:

a. There are no minimum marks required for IIT JEE Mains in their class 12th board examination. However, the appearing candidates have to secure at least the passing marks in their respective qualifying examination.

b. JEE Mains Eligibility Criteria for students belonging to the general category: The Students must have secured a minimum of 75% marks in their class 12th board exams or they must rank among the top 20 percentile in their qualifying examination for getting admissions into different IITs, NITs, IIITs and other CFTIs.

c. JEE Mains Eligibility Criteria for students belonging to the reserved categories (SC, ST & Pwd): A minimum of 65% marks are required for getting admissions into different undergraduate courses offered at IITs, NITs, IIITs and other CFTIs which are considering admissions on the basis of JEE Mains or JEE Advanced ranks.

E. Subjects pursued in the Qualifying Examination:

a. It is mandatory for all students appearing for JEE Mains that they must have pursued at least 5 subjects with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as their core subjects in their qualifying examinations.

b. Students are not eligible for appearing in JEE Mains who have studied less than 5 subjects in their qualifying exam.

F. Year of passing in the Qualifying Examination:

a. Students who have passed their 12th Class examination or any other equivalent qualifying examination in 2016 or 2017 are eligible for appearing in JEE Mains 2018.

b. Students currently appearing for their Class 12th examination or any other equivalent qualifying examination are also eligible, provided their result should be declared before 15th of June 2018.

JEE Mains eligibility criteria mentioned above have to be fulfilled by each candidate. The conducting authorities (CBSE) for JEE set these guidelines. The JEE Mains exam also forms an eligibility test for the JEE Advanced exam. The top 2,24,000 candidates who will qualify the JEE Mains will be allowed to appear for the JEE Advanced exam.

Admission to NITs, IIITs and CFTIs participating though Central Seat Allocation Board will be based on All India Rank as explained above in section 2.10 subject to the condition that the candidate should have secured at least 75% marks in the 12th class examination, or be in the top 20 percentile in the 12th  class examination conducted by the respective Boards. For SC/ST candidates the qualifying marks would be 65% in the 12th class examination.

Subject combinations required in the qualifying examination for admission to B.E./B.Tech. & B. Arch./B. Planning Courses in NITs, IIITs, and other CFTIs shall be as under.

Course Required Criteria based on Class 12th / Equivalent qualifying Examination
B.E/B.TECH Passed 10+2 examination with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with one of the Chemistry/Biotechnology/Biology/ Technical Vocational subject.
B.ARCH./B.PLANNI NG Passed 10+2 examination with Mathematics.

Eligibility for Admission to Other Institutions

The  above  mentioned  policy  could  also  be  adopted  by  other  Technical  Institutions participating  in counselling through JoSAA/CSAB. In case a State opts to  admit students in the engineering Colleges affiliated to state Universities, the State may prepare separate rank list based on criteria decided by them.
Number of seats in various institutions

For all admission related procedures/queries, the candidates are advised to refer the website of JoSAA, Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) or the concerned state government/institute after declaration of ranks of JEE (Main)–2018. The letter/e-mails/grievances/RTI cases/Court cases regarding admission related procedures/queries will not be entertained by JEE (Main) Secretariat /CBSE.

Reservation of seats

As  per  Government of India  rules candidates belonging to  certain categories are admitted to  seats reserved for them based on relaxed criteria. These categories are:

I.      Other Backward Classes (OBC) if they belong to Non Creamy Layer (NCL)

II.      Scheduled Castes (SC)
III.      Scheduled Tribes (ST)

IV.      Persons with Disability (PwD)with 40% or more disability

Benefit of reservation for admission to NITs/IIITs and CFTIs shall be given only to those classes/castes/tribes which are in the respective central list published by the Govt of India. For admission to State Engineering colleges who have opted for admission through JEE(Main)-2018, the reservation rules of that state shall apply. The letter/e-mails/grievances/RTI cases/Court cases regarding reservation criteria will not be entertained by JEE (Main) Secretariat/ CBSE.

Seat Allocation Process and Admission Procedure

Candidates shall be offered admission based on their choices and All India Ranks of JEE (Main)-2018 through a Seat Allocation Process to be announced later. The candidates will be able to make their choices online for branches/programmes and institutes at appropriate time.
Candidates are advised to regularly visit the JEE(Main) website for latest information. The verification of documents would be done at the time of Seat Allocation Process/admission. The purpose would be to verify different records regarding identification, age, qualifying examination, state of eligibility, category and disability (if any) of the candidate. On failing to produce any of the authentic documents, the candidate will not be considered for admission.

SC, ST, OBC and PwD candidates will be required to produce original certificate issued by the competent authority at the time of Seat Allocation Process as well as at the time of admission, failing which they will not be considered for admission.
