TN State board’s new Class XI exam pattern Released – stress on internal assessment
TN State board’s new Class XI exam pattern 2017 unveiled on Friday – stress on internal assessment
Tamilnadu Class XI boards stress on internal assessment : Detangling the system of long-winding theory papers synonymous with board exams for years, the TN state board’s new Class XI exam pattern unveiled on Friday seems to be a shift towards a continuous assessment mode, similar to that followed by CBSE.
The format lays more emphasis on performance parameters like classroom assessment, attendance and test performance rather than marks alone. This is especially reflected in subjects with practical components like physics/chemistry where 15 marks are enough to pass a theory paper with a total of 70 marks.
School education minister K A Sengottaiyan announced the marking structure for the public exam which will test students on a total of 600 marks of which a considerable chunk will, for the first time, be internal marks. This means, each student will be scored on a total internal score of 60 marks of 600 (10% on each of the six subjects).
This will allow students to breathe easier, as the passing criterion for each theory paper has become lighter. While 15/70 is the cut-off for subjects with practicals, others only demand 25/90 marks. However, a student has to score 35/100 in each subject (including internal components + practicals) to ‘pass’.
This will be applicable to language papers including English and all 23 different core subjects,” he told reporters. The exam pattern for vocational streams was also announced, with a 75% weightage on practical components.
Reducing the weightage for theory papers also ties in with the state’s plan to do away with detailed/long-form answers in the paper. As reported by TOI earlier, the 10-mark questions have been done away with, keeping the question paper pattern simple. While the objective type and 5-mark questions are mandatory, the 2-mark and 3-mark questions give an option to attend 6 of 9 questions.
