Tamil Nadu Transport workers’ strike enters day two

CHENNAI: Transport workers’ strike over their pending retirement benefits in Tamil Nadu has entered day two. Nearly 40% of buses have already gone off road, claim unions.

More than 1.4 lakh employees from state transport undertakings across Tamil Nadu are on a strike demanding immediate release of their pending dues worth nearly Rs 7,500 crores.

Though insurance premiums were deducted from employees’ salary, the state transport department has not paid the deducted amount with any insurance agencies, said M Shanmugam from Labour Progressive Front(LPF), labour wing of opposition DMK. “As a result of this, employees are unable to avail themselves of insurance benefits during emergencies”.

Though state transport minister MR Vijayabaskar assured workers that it would be released before October this year, the issue remains unresolved, he said.

As public transport services have been crippled in some parts of the state, particularly in western Tamil Nadu, the transport department has called for a meeting with protestors around 3 pm on Friday.

In Chennai, Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has employed retired staff and technical staff from depots to operate buses. Some buses are run as ‘cut services’. For instance, bus which is suppose to ply from Thiruvottiyur to Koyambedu is operated only till Broadway. Passengers are left stranded in depots.
