WhatsApp Controversy – Government takes U Turn, According to the draft posted by Deity, there are certain categories of encryption products that will be exempted from the purview of the draft national encryption policy.
Hours After the WhatsApp Controversy, how you use WhatsApp and other communication services on your phone could change dramatically, the government has said that a proposal under review will not apply to social media. The clarification from the government comes after public outrage over what was posted online as a draft proposal of a new national encryption policy.
Department of Electronics and Information Technology clarified in a draft that social media websites and applications will be exempted from the purview of the Encryption Policy. According to the draft posted by Deity, there are certain categories of encryption products that will be exempted from the purview of the draft national encryption policy.
PROPOSED ADDENDUM TO THE DRAFT ENCRYPTION POLICY
1. The mass use encryption products, which are currently being used in web applications, social media sites, and social media applications such as Whatsapp,Facebook,Twitter etc.
2. SSL/TLS encryption products being used in Internet-banking and payment gateways as directed by the Reserve Bank of India.
3. SSL/TLS encryption products being used for e-commerce and password based transactions.
